Cherry Harvest at FRC Randwijk

The cherry harvest at FRC Randwijk is also in full swing. It’s clear that this year there’s a significant difference in harvest timing between Rovero (bloom closed) and Voen (closed in May).

Among the early varieties, Sweet Aryana performed very well in Randwijk compared to many commercial orchards. This was partly due to SSA pruning (very short branches, max. 50 cm). Hardly any thinning was needed, and there were no cracks to be found.

The clear winner in the early segment is Prim 3.1, with beautiful, large fruits. It also has excellent flavor and good firmness.

Heat: This week, the roof of the greenhouse was whitewashed, which makes a big difference in the climate. Additionally, the gutter near the roof in Randwijk is NOT hermetically sealed, which makes a significant difference in temperature. This allows the heat to escape effectively. The roofs above the berries were also whitewashed, and the benefits of this were clearly visible there as well.

Next week, the final merchant harvest will take place, followed by the harvest of all varieties up to Kordia!
