M.9 has been by far the most commonly used rootstock in the Netherlands for many years. While M.9 still performs well in many cases, increasing challenges are being observed, including woolly apple aphid infestations, root suckers (which serve as entry points for Neonectria), and reduced vitality in replant situations. These issues are becoming more relevant as more orchards are replanted in the same rows, partly due to the increasing use of hail nets.


Using potting soil can promote growth in replant situations, but it often leads to increased problems with mice, while rodent control options in orchards are no longer permitted. Additionally, weak-growing apple varieties such as SQ159 (Magic Star/Natyra) increasingly require a more vigorous rootstock for successful replanting.


In recent years, several promising apple rootstocks have been introduced worldwide. The Geneva series, developed by Cornell University in Geneva, USA, has gained significant attention due to its beneficial characteristics: absence of root suckers, resistance to fire blight and woolly apple aphid, tolerance to replant diseases, and frost resistance.


In 2018, a rootstock trial was established at FRC Randwijk, including several of these Geneva rootstocks: G.11, G.16, G.41, and G.202. Additionally, some older potentially valuable rootstocks—B.9, Mark, and Voinesti 2—were included in the trial.


The goal of this study is to assess the added value of these apple rootstocks compared to the standard M.9 in a replant situation with Elstar, the most widely grown variety in the Netherlands. Additionally, the trial investigates the effect of planting height on these rootstocks. It is well known that higher planting reduces vigor in M.9. For more vigorous rootstocks that do not develop root suckers, this could be an interesting approach.
