The Variety Scorecard

Apple and pear growers face increasingly complex decisions when selecting suitable varieties. To support them, an updated Variety Scorecard has been developed based on practical experience and literature research. These scorecards combine insights on disease pressure, climate influences, and economic factors. They are designed to help fruit growers choose varieties that align with their farm conditions, growing environment, and long-term plans.

By comparing varieties across the various characteristics outlined in the scorecard, growers can better manage risks and address challenges such as climate change. The development of the Variety Scorecard is part of the practice-oriented program ‘Weerbaarheid in de praktijk’, a collaboration between various organizations aimed at making fruit production more future-proof.

This practical tool supports growers not only in selecting new plantings but also in making strategic decisions about crop protection, storage strategies, and investments in cultivation measures. In this way, the scorecard contributes to a more sustainable and economically resilient fruit sector.
